In ancient times, a pillow was a luxury item. The upper class were the only privileged ones who could afford it, unlike today. Even the reasons for using pillows were not for comfort or health reasons.
Let’s trace the history of the pillow:
7000 B.C – ANCIENT MESOPOTAMIA
The first pillows were created in Mesopotamia. It was used, primarily, to keep insects from crawling into a person’s nose, mouth or hair. But perhaps the most interesting fact about these ancient pillows was that they were made of stone, in contrast to the comfortable material we normally associate with pillows today.
2055 B.C – ANCIENT EGYPT
Ancient Egyptians thought that the pillow protected the head, which was the spiritual centre of the body. They made pillows from wood to support the neck and spine, as well as for blood circulation. They believed that pillows had a mystical element and historians often consider this divine belief in pillows is why they were used for mummies of the upper class.
907 B.C – ANCIENT CHINA
In ancient China, however, pillows were made from a variety of materials – porcelain, bronze, jade, stone, bamboo and wood. The reason the Chinese didn’t make softer pillows was because they believed that these pillows were unsuccessful at keeping demons away and that softer pillows stole energy and vitality from the body while you slept.
753 B.C – ANCIENT ROME AND GREECE
It was in Europe that pillows gained their comfortable luxurious feel. Soft pillows from feathers and straw were made by the ancient Romans and Greek who used it to relax
900 A.D – EUROPE
In the Middle Ages, people believed that sleeping on pillows was a sign of weakness, so they were only used by kings and pregnant women.
1800 A.D – ENGLAND
With the advent of the Industrial Revolution, pillows became a household commodity.
1929 A.D – UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
Latex for mattresses was first produced and used – until World War II, when Japanese armies in Malaya ravaged the rubber plantations. The only way asthma patients and those with a bad back could get a latex mattress was through a doctor’s prescription.
Thankfully, those days are behind us. MM Foam provides that much needed comfort to all who need it, with our 100% Natural Latex pillows. We’ve got your back.
